The Student

Things I used to do when I was younger and very C H O L E R I C...and tips that I wanted to share now that I'm a S A N G U I N E ^-^

1. Practice POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT. My reward for studying is watching anime ever since second grade. I reward myself before and after every exam. Unfortunately, I do not have a passion in studying, but I do have a passion in watching anime.

2. Make a timetable. At the beginning of every quarter/sem, I create a mini time schedule of all my subjects and the timeslots of the anime shows I watch in MS Excel. I print reproduce multiple copies and paste them in every notebook and in my binder.

THERE IS A TIME FOR EVERYTHING.

3. Keep your course outline. It would serve as a guide so that you wouldn't get lost in the lecture. I staple the printed outlines in my notebook cover.

4. Mark all the important dates - exams, deadlines, reports, etc in a calendar or organizer. It's a visual thing. You need to see it to remember it.

5. Take down notes. Memorize with your eyes and hand. Personalize them. I doodle. I don't write everything my professor says, I just watch out for some magic words: therefore, because, as a result, etc.

6. Link handouts. I put a date and a number on the handout and put a link in my notebook so that I won't go crazy during exams figuring out what is under what topic. xD I got this tip from my professor.

7. Practice solving Math problems. Learning Math is like learning a new language. You have to practice. Once my professor hands out the worksheets/assignments, I do it asap. Never ever wait til the night before the next meeting to do it. Most likely, you'll forget how to solve it or how to go about the problems. During the exam, you'll be amazed on how familiar the problems are that your hand would start moving as if it was the most normal thing to do ^0^ Our hands are intelligent too.

8. Do assignments religiously. It cuts out your review time. And this is the easiest way to earn points.

9. Browse notes. Quizzes can help pull up our grades. Usually, the total of all quizzes is equivalent to one long exam. Take it from one who is a total klutz in P.E. class and raised her grades through quizzes and exams.

10. Raise that hand. I don't like reciting in class, but to save me the trouble of losing points just because of my attitude, I answer questions that I know. Don't wait, just raise your hand and grab that oppurtunity. Or you'll end up getting called for a more difficult question. Or if you really don't want to be called, maintain eye contact with your professor and nod at him/her from time to time, it gives them the impression that you understand the lecture perfectly ^0^ Make that professor know you, remember you. Professors are generous to these students.

11. Develop a review habit that would work for youMine is the anime review-study habit :p Others make reviewers, while others read their notes out loud, like my sister. While there are some, who watch tv before studying, like Keeper xD

I make my own reviewers, because I have higher chances of remembering what I read if I wrote it down. My reviewers are not duplicates of my notes. They are strips of papers, folded lengthwise in four sections, filled with keywords. And as much as possible, I review a week or more than a week before the exam. A week before would do, if I constantly browse my notes.

Tailor it to your personality and how your brain works.

12. If possible, arrive early to the exam venue. Yes, there is bound to be someone who loves showing off what he/she knows. And for sure, there would be another one who would correct this person if he/she gives a wrong information. So, use that time to listen.

13. Relax. You can't possibly learn anything new in five minutes before the exam. Don't open those notes, it would only confuse you. So after #11, have a quiet time. I pray; lift everything up to Him in thanksgiving and praise ^0^ Miracles do happen ^-^

14. Don't dwell on one question for too long. Mark it before skipping it. I usually do the exam backwards, lols

15. The first answer is usually the best answer. But, before handing out that exam, REVIEW your answers. Check your spelling ^0^

16. Answer briefly. The chances of you giving out wrong information is high when you don't go directly to the point.

17. E X P E R I E N C E as much as you can. School feels like a torture chamber most of the time but there are things that can only be learned by going to school. It taught me how to deal with different kinds of personalities. Believe me, you can practice on your classmates, especially the immature ones. I mean, grown ups don't accept their mistakes easily. Learn how to work with these kinds of people. Talk to your classmates, learn to make friends, you need to socialize in the workplace.

School teaches you to be patient. By waiting for groupmates who are forever late, I developed ways to make use of my time while waiting for the meeting to start. It makes you an expert in working under pressure, but with grace.

Problem solving would be an everyday thing at work. You will be amazed on the number of problems you need to face just to get through the day. But if you actually tried to answer that question in the exam or lab exercise, you'll know how to deal with it. It is our teachers way to practice us in the future. It's not all about the information you put in that paper, it's the process your brain went through to solve that problem.

When you graduate, you will forget most of what was taught anyway. Don't worry, there is google to remind you of them. What's important is the experience you gained from it. It is not all about the grades. You need the skills in order to function well in the workplace.

18. LEARN, RE-LEARN and UN-LEARN. Be ciritical. Have an open mind. Don't accept everything the teachers tell you. It is better to get a low grade for something you stood up for than a perfect grade for something you just accepted without thinking. And never ever CHEAT.

19. Never settle for mediocre work. In everything you do, do it excellently ^0^

20. Study for yourself and no one else. It would be nice if you could honor your parents with good grades but don't do it for them.

This might not work for you. I believe we do things DIFFERENTLY. Whatever it is that you are comfortable in doing, make it work for you. I made this work for me and I graduated magna cum laude, without missing an episode in any of the anime shows I watch ^0^
